Lesson 1: encountering opposition
Discussion
When encountering opposition, true decency requires us to pause and seek understanding. Opposition often stems from deeply held beliefs, fears, or past experiences. Meeting resistance with curiosity and compassion can transform the dynamic. Listen more than you speak, and ask yourself: What might this person fear losing? What values are they protecting? Acknowledging their concerns builds trust and opens the door to dialogue. Stay calm and use respectful language. A simple statement, “I see where you’re coming from, and I appreciate you sharing that with me,” can make a big difference.
Action
Think of a recent conversation when someone disagreed with you. Reflect on their possible motivations and how you could reframe the discussion to show understanding. Practice this approach in your next interaction.
